Poggio all'Aglione
The Poggio all'Aglione Park is located a few hundred meters from Rigone in Chianti, on the road to Volterra and San Gimignano. It is an oasis of tranquillity surrounded by centuries-old oaks and majestic pine trees, 460 meters above sea level. Here you can go jogging under the shade of the trees, or walk with friends, or simply walk your dog while breathing in fresh air and listening to the sounds of nature.
Itineraries in Nature
The Itineraries in Nature invite you to discover the Tuscan countryside in all its beauty, including picturesque hamlets and towns, shady woods, ancient churches, ruins and breathtaking views. With 83 km of marked trails, divided into six main itineraries, you can explore the Montaione area on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback. Many routes are circular, making them ideal for starting and returning comfortably from the same point. Along the way, you’ll cross ‘strade bianche’ (the typical Tuscan gravel roads), woods and cultivated countryside, enjoying spectacular views, encounters with local fauna and glimpses rich in history. Each itinerary offers a unique experience, where nature, culture and relaxation blend harmoniously.
Itinerary 1:
Montaione – Mannello – Fornace – Terraio – Montaione
- Distance: 8 km
- Grade: easy
- Time: 1 hour 30
- A circular route on paved road and through sections of bushland and cultivated fields, it traces the ancient Castellana road between Montaione and Castelfiorentino.
Itinerary 2:
Montaione – Bosco Gucci – Cappella del Lupo – Castelfalfi – Sughera – Piaggia – Galano – Montaione
- Distance: 16 km
- Grade: moderate
- Time: 3 hours 15
- A wooded route with two fords of the Evola stream and two challenging climbs. It combines sections of forest with paved roads.
Itinerary 3:
Montaione – Tre Ponti – Fiume Egola – San Vivaldo – Montaione
- Detour A: Poggio all’Aglione – 7.8km, easy, 2 hours 20
- Detour B: Pozzo Latino – Le Tagliate – 3.4km, easy, 1 hour
- Detour C: Fiume Egola – Montaione – 3.4km, challenging, 2 hours 20
- A network of paths with woods and paved roads. Close to historic places such as San Vivaldo and the Roman Cistern.

Itinerary 4:
Leonardo – Pietrina – Palagio – Casicello – Iano – Marrado
- Integration: Iano – Pian della Querce
- Distance: 10.4km
- Grade: easy
- Time: 2 hours 30
- Three mainly wooded circular routes, with panoramic points, including the view from the Promontory and the Sanctuary of Pietrina.
Itinerary 5:
Castelfalfi – Iano – San Vivaldo – Vignale – Cappella del Lupo – Castelfalfi
- Integration: Capanne – Vignale Vecchio
- Distance: 20.2 km
- Grade: easy
- Time: 4 hours
- A long route along ‘strade bianche’ and paved roads, with two circular routes in the countryside, in amongst badlands and cultivated fields. Great for mountain biking.
Itinerary 6:
Casastrada – Collegalli – Balconevisi – Casastrada
- Integration: Collegalli – Sughera
- Distance: 13.7 km
- Grade: easy
- Time: 3 hours 30
- A long route on ‘strade bianche’, through woods and badlands. A variant to the hamlet of Sughera.
Il Santuario della Pietrina
The Pietrina Promontory, with its Sanctuary, is one of Montaione’s most enchanting spots where history, spirituality and nature come together in an unforgettable experience. The walk up takes you through the evocative Selva di Camporena, along a quiet trail lined with holm oaks and pines. At the top, a breathtaking panorama opens up: the gentle hills of the Valdera, majestic Volterra in the distance, the tower of Montecatini, the Val di Cecina and, on the clearest days, even the sea on the horizon. On the promontory there are still two ruined towers of the ancient castle of La Pietra, dating back to 1100. Beside it, the Church of Sant’Andrea and the small sanctuary preserve the memory of a precious 14th-century polyptych by Bartolo di Fredi, a pupil of Simone Martini: a Madonna and Child holding an apple, now viewable in a copy.
Devotion to Our Lady of Pietrina lives on each year in the moving procession held on the last Sunday of September.
But the wonders don't end there. Descending along a path wrapped in lush vegetation, you suddenly find yourself at the foot of the Masso del Becco cliff a spectacular rock face rising dozens of metres above you. Here, outcrops of quartzite and Verrucano conglomerate reveal geological formations dating back around 250 million years, making this place a true treasure trove of natural history.
